morning devotional for my software team

Message

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid? For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

As we take a closer look today at all that we've been doing, all that we've accomplished, and how we can improve for the future, let's give thanks to God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Deism is a constant temptation for us, as we walk in the good works that God has prepared beforehand for us to walk in each day. Though we probably don't imagine God booting up his laptop at 8am every work day, sipping some coffee, and clicking on a shortcut on his desktop so that He can hit the beach for the rest of the day, doesn't our lack of daily thanksgiving suggest that we sometimes do?  We easily forget that God is  the Extreme Programmer.  The Spirit is always faithful to pair with us. Not one line of code is written, compiled, or executed apart from the Father's decree. The Son will not even let one single appointed whitespace or comment pass away until all is accomplished.  Think about all the things we can give thanks for, when we realize He is with us in all of this, for from him and through him and to him are all things .

But what about all those things that seem to get in our way for doing all the good works we've planned?  Surely, God is out to lunch when those happen!  Those twenty emails that arrived after I just caught up.  Those jira issues that seem to come in faster than we can fix them.

Our God is not just Lord of the finished product in all its glory, but over the entire process, however frustrating or time consuming it may seem sometimes.  We want all that is glorious now, all at once, apart from inconveniences, apart from pain.  Our Creator is not only interested in our software passing all the tests, but our very hearts.  When push comes to shove, it is our attitudes and character that God gives priority in his heavenly triage. We need constant debugging. He has taken ownership over our development, even when He isn't to blame for the bugs we'd rather call "features" in our hearts, for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus.

He is much more patient with us than we are with Him.  He is a God who pleases to take His time. He took six days to call all things good, savoring the last day as best. He delighted in the development process, when He could have just clicked on a shortcut. His Spirit took over a thousand years to inscripturate the Holy Scripture. He endured thousands of years of rebellion until time was appointed to labor in birth with His promised Son. The Son learned the obedience of an eternal priest for us through the things he suffered. And it pleased His Father to take time to crush the Son on our behalf.

Look at the bigger picture now. The whole creation still groans with childbirth pains for our glorification. We are participants in that new creation, the regeneration of all things. Christ is the firstborn and His church is the center of that new cosmos to come. We are the temple from which His glory will fill the earth. Every day, new stones are being made alive, sons of Abraham, crying out, declaring His glory.

Programming should be for us an act of faith that God is using to build His church. We are not just IT support. We are Holy Temple support. Not only is our software development an act of mercy for missionaries, it is an act of war.  As technology has developed, so has the sophisticated tactics and defenses of our enemy. True, we are not on the front lines, but our tools are being employed for front line usage. Wherever there is development of literacy in the world, Scripture will continue to gain ground through the gates of Hell in hearts that hear.

Can't you hear the Lamb in heaven breaking the seals of His scroll across the globe, shaking all that remains to be shaken? (Rev 5:9) Countless peoples are worshipping God in their own tongue. Praise the Lord!

We're getting close

Message
Dear beloved friends,

Fieldworks Language Explorer (FLEx) is approaching version 1.0. Thanks to all for your support, FLEx, our lexicon and grammar tool, is entering into its final test phase.  We're planning to finish testing by mid-October so that we can deliver version 1.0 in time for our upcoming Computer Technical Conference (CTC). We've made great progress over the summer getting in our final features and improvements, and eradicating major bugs that would prevent field workers from effectively doing their language projects with the tool. Continue to pray that we'll be able to sufficiently test the application's functionality and that we'll have wisdom for fixing any "show stoppers."

Test volunteers are needed. If you know of anyone who would be willing to volunteer some time to help us test the software, let me know!  Knowledge of linguistics is helpful but not required for many parts of the program. In fact, we recently asked a group of high school students to come for a few hours (for free pizza). They were very productive!

Check-IT-Out in Seattleour information technology conference in June, drew attention from several techies residing in one of our country's most important technical sectors. Visit http://EricPyle.shutterfly.com for more pictures from my Seattle trip.
Check-IT-Out in Seattle
Seminary class starts up again this week (Sep 22).  I'm planning to take another three hour biblical counseling class: Problems and Procedures by Ed Welch. Only 10 hours remaining for a master's degree at $360/hr.  I would appreciate prayers for time, finances, and wisdom to finish well!

I have a few upcoming opportunities to share about my software work for Wycliffe in October, including Christ the King OPC in Longview, TX (Oct 1), and a missions conference at Eagle Heights Church in Oklahoma City (Oct 11-15).  Pray that it will be a blessing for all.

More encouraging user feedback:
I've had a dream--lexicography software with tools specifically designed to easily and efficiently collect data and develop a database. FieldWorks Language Explorer (FLEx) is the realization of that dream. With tens of thousands of lexemes in a language, efficiency is not a luxury. The
Bulk Edit tools in FLEx efficiently handle massive amounts of data. For the first time I have an easy to use tool that eliminates much of the tedium. Now I can concentrate on analysis and decision making. -- Ron Moe, SIL Lexicographer.

Yours in Christ the Lord,
Eric D. Pyle

Culture shock

One morning early West African morning, Gordon, a co-worker of mine at SIL, arose to find his family had lost power to their house. He went outside to look at the teleophone poles. Behold: Not only had they lost power to their house, there was no longer any power line! 200 feet or more of power line had been completely stolen during the night!

Gordon phoned the utilities company. They said that their truck had broken down, so he'd have to pick them up if he wanted the line replaced. That's what he did. On their way out, Gordon, astonished by the stolen power line, asked the men, "Isn't it dangerous for people to cut a power line?" The utilities men knodded enthusiastically, "Oh yes. It is very dangerous. Half of the time when we come to replace these lines we find a dead man next to the pole."

Shocking story? Welcome to West Africa! Just goes to show how much we take our cultural infrastructures here in the US for granted.

2005 Annual Report (Wycliffe)

Eric Pyle's 2005 Annual Report - Wycliffe - 02/04/2006

Dear friends and loved ones, this past year had plenty of good surprises:

In Giving

In 2005, God surprised me with
two new partners in giving.  What a joy it is to discover, apart from my prompting or their announcement, additional people joining our work for the vision of God's glorious future among the nations!

I was also startled to discover at the end of the year that giving had met 98% of my average monthly quota!  What amazing team of supporters God has given me!  Over half of the committments were completely fulfilled, and a few even increased their commitment or gave above their pledge. Praise the Lord!

A few of my main contributers have notified me of not being able to continue the same level of support this coming year. Please pray that the Lord will provide more partners to help cover any deficits.

2005 Financial Summary
Stated Quota:    $1664/mo    ($19,968/yr)
Pledged:         $1772/mo
Avg Received:    $1635/mo    ($19,222/yr)

I was able to present my work to a couple of church groups this past year.  Please pray for more of these opportunities to let others know about the work I do.  I have already spoken to a men's group in January at the church where I worship. Everyone said it was very interesting and informative!

In Prayer and Encouragement

Toward the end of the year, I was overwelmed with the number of people who told me they have been praying for me on a weekly basis, unbeknownst to me!  And looking back, I can see that God has surely provided for me in a number of important ways, including work, school, and fellowship:

I really love the work I'm doing here; my fellow teammates are family to me! Our team successfully completed the Beta of Fieldworks Language Explorer (FLex for short). This is the Grammar and Lexicon tool I've been working on for the past year. It is in the process of being distributed to field workers and should be freely available to download soon. Pray that missionaries working in minority languages would be able to use FLex for their language projects and will give us helpful feedback so this year we can continue to make it more useful to them.

In other news, I successfully completed two seminary classes this past year taught by Dr. Sinclair Ferguson. Seminary continues to be a rich and challenging experience, and I trust that the Lord will bless my studies for the benefit of his church. Please pray that I will have the time and money needed to complete the 13 hours for a Masters of Arts in Religion over the next two years.  (Classes currently run $340 per credit hour.)

Church worship and fellowship is a highlight every week.  It's been amazing to see so many families with children growing up in the Lord, and to get to know some of them. I've also been blessed to get to know several linguistics students and missionary kids (MKs) over the past year, who frequent the cafeteria on campus.  I've especially enjoyed meeting with the MKs on a weekly basis to watch and discuss movies that invite spiritual reflection. I've even had a few opportunities to get to know some godly women this past year. You may continue to pray for that as well, as I know a number of you have been! :-)

Yours by His faithfulness, Eric D. Pyle

Wycliffe brief update

Message
Dear friends, family, and fellow believers,

Since I last wrote a couple months ago, I've been busy helping to add some cool new features to our dictionary tool that is still under construction. One such feature is giving each missionary power to configure how the tool displays their dictionary entries in a way that makes sense for their language project. I've also been working with another programmer on a feature to enable our missionaries to specify the relationship between words like "synonym" and "antonym" or "whole" and "part".  We're hoping to be finished with this round of new features by the end of June. Then we'll focus on making the tool more reliable to use. If all goes as scheduled, missionaries will be using this tool for their projects by the end of the year! My past March newsletter has an introduction to this new software and its value for helping to speed up the translation process.  In case you missed it, check out the "Dictionaries with Hyper-Drive" box (http://opcNorman.org/Wycliffe/EricPyle/newsletters/heart_lang_exp_mar05.pdf).

Our JAARS team just returned from India where they showed off the Translation editor tool they are trying to finish in order to gain user support for it.  Rumor has it that one well respected translator there has decided to start using the tool to finish his Old Testament translation.  This means many others will likely want to use it on their translations also.

The number of us programmers has dwindled for the summer in Dallas. (Down to five in my room.) Some of us are working remotely from over seas or are on furlough. Most of us are typically either working at JAARS in Waxhaw, NC or at SIL in Dallas, TX, but a few of us are located in places like Canada and the UK. To give you an idea of what we all look like together, I've uploaded a picture taken at our developers' conference in March.  (If you squint, you can see me on the top row on the far right.)

http://share.shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=EeEMnLFs5ctGMs

In other news, I finished my seminary class and men's leadership class a couple of weeks ago.  But that doesn't mean I'm through with all the real-life homework assignments God will give me in his providence this summer!

Please pray I'll continue to grow in usefulness to my team. Many of the tasks that I am working on are new and complex.  There are so many opportunities each day for me to actively learn from the experience and ideas of the programmers I work with.  We would also appreciate your prayers that the Lord would add to our numbers here. We could sure use some more local staff!

Thanks again for all your support!

Blessings abounding in Christ,
Eric D. Pyle

Dear friends, family, and brothers and sisters in Christ,

You may be wondering: How are things going? Well. I've been pleasantly busy, but it has been on my heart to inform you on what I've been doing since I started my assigment at SIL in December.  I've posted my latest (March 2005) newsletter here at the top of my Communications section:

http://www.opcNorman.org/Wycliffe/EricPyle/#Communications

Headlines:
  • Thanks to your prayers and support...
  • For the months ahead...
  • We prayed for you...
  • Prayer requests
  • [InfoBox] More Bibles started in the past 4 years than in the rest of history!
  • [InfoBox] Dictionaries with Hyper-drive

In addition to my work with Wycliffe Bible Translators, some of you might like to know that I have been taking a seminary class every Tuesday at Westminster Theological Seminary in Dallas.  Dr. Sinclair Ferguson is teaching us "The Doctrine of God", and it has been an endless, triune source of blessing to my soul. In addition to this study, I am participating in a men's study every Saturday at a local PCA church where I have been worshipping. With the help of a few books, we are being challenged by the Bible's teachings concerning the responsibilities of the church, its leadership, and a husband's role in marriage.  Every week, I am impressed with God's wisdom in all things, and thankful for the grace He gives for me to reflect that wisdom in all my relationships.

It is such an encouragement whenever I hear from you, and I truly enjoy responding to each of you.

I'm almost there!

Greetings, friends and family, brothers and sisters in the Lord,

About two months ago, I was visiting some friends at Wycliffe's International Headquarters in Dallas, when I noticed a member of Wycliffe's software development team tending his yard. Ken stopped and crossed the street to talk with me. He encouraged me that his team was praying for me. "In expectation of your arrival, our department recently purchased a couple of new computers," he said, "We have one just waiting for you." My heart became even more excited about getting to my assignment. But then I expressed some doubt about making it there by the end of the summer. Ken reminded me, "God's plans are not always our plans, but they are always better."

Where am I? Several people have been asking me how close I am to beginning my assignment. As you may remember, my hope was to start serving Wycliffe Bible Translators as a Language Software Developer by the end of the summer. By God's good and wise counsel, I'm almost there! In response to your prayers, God has brought my partnership team near completion: In addition to the many people who pray for me regularly, I have over 90% financial commitment! So I am looking to God to provide partners to cover the remaining $135/mo. I am always thankful for more partners in prayer.

I've received a few new commitments from churches and individuals over the summer. The main development since my last update, however, is that my monthly missions quota has been lowered because a friend of mine has graciously offered me a place to stay without rent. To ensure that I will not be a financial burden to him, I have offered to cover half of his monthly utility bills. So, most of my remaining partnership will go towards our utilities each month. Keith is handicapped, so I will also be happy to help him with the upkeep of his house.

Where'd the summer go? Most of my time has been spent working on partnership related activities and serving churches in some fashion. In August, I mailed my summer newsletter out to over 135 contacts along with personal notes to partners and others interested in keeping up with me. My mailing list continues to grow steadily.

In July, I shared about missions and technology at a church in my home town, following my 10-year class reunion for Noble High School. (Has it really been that long?) I also served the youth from several churches as a photographer at a church camp in Amarillo, TX. In September, I distributed CD's with camp photos and video to the youth from that camp.

Also in September, I attended my seminary's opening convocation and a couple of software technology talks at Wycliffe's International Headquarters in Dallas.

What's next? With only $135/mo remaining to complete my partnership team, my hope and prayer is to be at my assignment by the end of the year. I could be there much sooner by God's provision through your prayers. Autumn is an important season for finding new partners because many church leaders are making decisions about their budget for the next year. Please pray the Lord would continue to provide opportunities for me to share with churches about the impact of technology in the work of Wycliffe Bible Translators, and that hearts will be moved to join with me in the mission of bringing God's Word to millions who still need it in their own language. I'm ready to put that lonely computer to work! :)

If you'd like to know how you can join my partnership team, please email me at eric_pyle @ wycliffe.org or reply to this letter.

Your partner in the Kingdom,
Eric D. Pyle

personal update for Wycliffe

Thanks to your prayers, creating software tools for Bible translators has never seemed closer. In addition to receiving encouragement and new commitments to prayer every month, I believe I now only need about $700 per month (of $2100) in financial commitment from churches and/or individuals. So by the end of the summer, Lord willing, I will be on a team to support the technical needs of those who are translating the Bible into languages that need it.

This week I am excited to attend the SIL Developer Conference in Dallas. This conference will allow me to get to know my Language Software team better (and vice-versa). It will also help me see what projects everyone is working on and the importance of their new technologies for Bible Translation.

Continue to pray that I will have more opportunities to share with churches. Everyone needs to know the importance of computer technology for bringing the Bible to people who need it in their own language. Pray my safety in travels and growth in His grace in areas where God can use me to serve others.

Look for my next newsletter in June.

Blessings in Christ alone,
Eric Pyle
