Grace e-mail bulletin - 9/22/04

Grace Presbyterian Church

E-mail bulletin

September 22, 2004

Dear Members and Friends of Grace,

Greetings in the matchless name of Jesus Christ! I trust this message finds you all doing well.

Note the following information:

          Last week:

-         The Presbytery of the Southwest met last week near Austin, Texas. It was an encouraging time of fellowship as well as a time to consider various matters related to the life and ministry of the regional church. Here are some of the actions taken by presbytery and some matters for prayer:

o       The presbytery voted to extend Bill Doerfel’s service as an augmentee to the session of Grace for two more years. We look forward to Bill’s continued labors in our midst.

o       The possibility of the presbytery’s future support of OP missionary David Okken (Uganda) was raised. If this should happen, the Okkens would more or less be “adopted” by the churches of our presbytery as our missionary family. This would mean a closer relationship with them and a heightened interest in their labors in Uganda. At this point, it is still just a possibility.

o       The Young People’s Camp Committee asked presbytery’s advice for ways to help meet the cost of future camps. The presbytery is committed to seeing the camp continue, and we heard testimony of the importance of the camp to the spiritual life of the regional church.

o       Our regional home missionary, Rev. Gary Davenport, walked us through the presbytery’s homepage, http://austin-opc.net/opcsouthwest. If you haven’t already, take a minute to explore this website. It would be a good site to recommend to others that are interested in finding out more about presbyterianism.

o       The Presbytery committed funds to assist Redeemer OPC in Denton, Texas, in continuing her ministry. Pray that the Lord would grow this work.

          This coming Lord’s Day (9/26)

-         Bill Doerfel will continue his study of the book of Hebrews during the adult Sunday School class.

-         I will preach from Mark 11:1-11 during the morning service. The sermon will be “The Coming King”.

-         During the evening service, I will preach from 1 Samuel 28, “The Things Which We Have Heard”.

Pastor’s vacation:

-         The Johnson family will be away on vacation from Sept. 27th to October 11th. We will spend most of our time in Wisconsin and Illinois visiting Robyn’s family and our friends in the area. We appreciate your prayers for safety in our travels. If you have any pastoral needs, please contact one of the elders: Bill Doerfel (364-0830) or Dave Guild (605-2440). You may contact me by e-mail: pastor@opcNorman.org.

Upcoming Lord’s Days:

-         Because our family will be on vacation, Grace will have the privilege of hearing guest ministers proclaim the Word of God on October 3rd and 10th.

-         October 3rd: In the morning, Rev. Doerfel will fill the pulpit. In the evening, Mr. Dave Guild will lead in a study of the Heidelberg Catechism’s teaching on prayer.

-         October 10th: The Regional Home Missionary of the Presbytery of the Southwest, Rev. Gary Davenport, will teach the adult Sunday School and preach during the morning service. For the evening service, Mr. Dave Guild will continue his study on prayer.

To find out more, visit RUF’s website at http://www.ouruf.org or contact Rev. Doug Serven at dserven@ruf.org or 405-812-8758. Many of you know Rev. Serven from his having preached at Grace many times in the past. He is the RUF minister to Norman’s OU community.

OKC Reformed Conference:

-         Grace Presbyterian will be assisting in the planning and running of the next Oklahoma City Reformed Conference coming up in October (the 29th and 30th). The speaker at this year’s conference will be Jim Elliff, a former pastor and currently president of Christian Communications Worldwide. Mr. Elliff will speak on the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Christian.

-         Be sure to visit http://reformokc.com/. Here you’ll find more information about the conference.

Voter registration:

-         If you are not already registered to vote in Oklahoma for the upcoming elections in November, there are voter registration applications available on the literature rack in the narthex of the church. While Grace does not endorse any specific party or candidate, I certainly encourage you to exercise your right and privilege to take part in the election of our civil authorities.

In Christ,

Grace e-mail bulletin - 9/14/04

Grace Presbyterian Church

E-mail bulletin

September 14, 2004

Dear Members and Friends of Grace,

Hello to you all in the name of our Good Shepherd, the Lord Jesus Christ. I hope you are finding rest and joy in Christ this week as you abide in him. And, I trust you are finding his grace sufficient to meet the challenges of each day.

Note the following information:

          Last Lord’s Day (9/12)

-         At the special congregational meeting that was held last Sunday, the congregation voted unanimously to approve the following recommendation brought before it by the session:

“That the congregation of Grace OPC request the Presbytery of the Southwest to appoint Mr. William Doerfel as an augmentee to the session at Grace indefinitely.”

The action was taken to provide for Bill’s ongoing service as an elder at Grace. Since his membership is with the presbytery, and not with any local church, the presbytery needs to approve his service with the session of a local church. We anticipate that presbytery will approve this request and look forward to Bill’s continuing labors for the sake of the church.

Wednesday evening prayer meeting (9/15):

-         Because of Presbytery meeting this week in Austin, there will be NO prayer meeting this Wednesday evening. We will meet as usual next Wednesday (9/22). For those who have not come to the prayer meeting, I encourage you to come and participate. We sing several hymns, discuss matters for prayer, and join together for a time of prayer. The meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. each Wednesday and takes place at the Johnsons’ house. Please contact me for more information.

         This coming Lord’s Day (9/19):

-         Bill Doerfel will teach from chapter 6 of the book of Hebrews for the adult Sunday School.

-         We welcome to the pulpit on Sunday morning Rev. Mike Shipma of Knox OPC in Oklahoma City, OK. As Rev. Shipma ministers the Word at Grace, I will be preaching at Knox.

-         For the evening worship service, I will preach from 1 Samuel 26:1-27:12, “Saints Who Fail”.

Upcoming Lord’s Days:

-         Because our family will be on vacation from Sept. 27th to October 11th, Grace will have the privilege of hearing guest ministers proclaim the Word of God on October 3rd and 10th.

-         The Presbytery of the Southwest (OPC) will meet this week, September 16-18 in Austin, Texas. Grace e-mail bulletin - 9/1/04

Grace Presbyterian Church

E-mail bulletin

September 1, 2004

Dear Members and Friends of Grace,

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14)

Rejoice with the Milligans in the birth of their baby boy this past Saturday! Brennan Tucker Milligan weighed 8 lbs., 3 oz., and both mother and baby are doing well. Congratulations Pete and Denean!

To look into the face of a newborn baby is to be reminded of the wonder and preciousness of human life, and of the greatness of our God who creates that life and sustains it. Lest we should ever doubt the importance and dignity of even the littlest one in our midst, let us remember that God himself became a baby in the person of Jesus. May we welcome our little ones into the family of God, knowing that God grants them a place with us in his Kingdom (Mark 10:14).

Note the following information:

          This coming Lord’s Day (9/5):

-         This Lord’s Day, we will resume our regular evening worship service. I will pick up our study of the book of 1 Samuel by preaching from 1 Samuel 23, “God is My Helper.”
