Dear Members and Friends of Grace,
For those of you who were planning to come
to our house on Friday night for our New Year’s get-together, I’m
sorry to say that we are going to have to cancel the event. Robyn came down
with the stomach flu yesterday and is still recuperating from it. Please keep
her in your prayers as having the flu and being 8 and ½ months pregnant at the same
time is quite a challenge!
May the Lord bless you all this New Year!
In Christ,

Dear Members and Friends of Grace,
So
teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12)
The passing of another year is a reminder
of the short time we have to live in this world. The other day I overheard the
parents of several grown children expressing their amazement at how quickly the
years had gone by. As I looked at our two young daughters, it seemed
implausible that their childhood days would race by so quickly that one day I
would make a similar comment. But, when we look back at the past years of our
lives, time always seems to have gone by quickly.
One of the prayers of the Psalmists is
that God would make known to them the brevity of their lives. David prays in
Psalm 39, “O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my
days; let me know how fleeting I am!” And Moses asks the Lord in Psalm 90
to “teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom”.
In these prayers, David and Moses are wrestling with the painful reality that
one day our lives on earth must come to an end. Yet, they are not despairing.
Instead, their prayer is for wisdom to make the most of each day God has given
them; that they may serve the Lord more faithfully and fruitfully.
The Bible’s ultimate answer to the
frustration the Psalmists and we ourselves sense at life’s brevity is the
eternal life Christ came to give us. Derek Kidner writes about these Psalms:
“Such ‘songs in the night’ reveal something of the
bewilderment about man that was only finally dispelled when the Word became
flesh, and when the gospel brought life and immortality to light.”
As another year fades into memory, and the
new year looms ahead, remember that each day is a gift of God to live for him.
But also remember that Christ promises an everlasting life in which we there
will be none of the discouragement and frustration of a temporary existence.
Instead, there will be only the never-ending joy and bliss of communion with
our heavenly Father and with the innumerable other children of God.

Bible
recommendation:

I received
an e-mail from a friend recently about a new
study Bible that looks excellent.
Presbyterian and Reformed (P&R) has wedded the notes and study materials of
the Reformation Study Bible: NKJV (formerly
the New Geneva Study Bible) with the text of the English Standard Version. The result is the New Reformation Study Bible (ESV). I highly
recommend this to you as a trustworthy resource. I have used the old New Geneva
Study Bible for years and have found the theological notes and study notes to
be invaluable. And, I believe the ESV is among the best of the modern English
translations. This bible will be available in February. For more information,

Dear Members and Friends of Grace,
But
when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born
under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive
adoption as sons. (Galatians 4:4,5)
This is to let you know that there will be
a special Christmas Eve service at Grace. The service will be at 6:00 p.m. on
Friday, December 24th, at the church.
The service will include many hymns and
Scripture readings, as well as a brief meditation on the birth of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
I’m looking forward to seeing you
there.

I recently finished reading this outstanding book. Marsden tells the story of Jonathan Edwards' life in a sympathetic but discerning way. There is no doubt that Edwards was a giant among giants among the faithful saints that have gone before us. I was very humbled to read about this man who was consumed with a passion for Christ and a deeply-felt concern for the believers under his charge as a pastor.
Edwards was also a man of his times in many ways. Marsden very helpfully analyzes Edwards' life and theology in light of the contemporary theological, sociological, and political landscape. He deals with the Great Awakening, the emerging forces of popular democracy, the noble but often sad attempts of evangelizing the indigenous peoples, and the nature of the controversy that led to Edwards' dismissal from his Northhampton pastorate.
What struck me about Edwards was his utter devotion to both experiential Christian piety and the study of Scripture. He was a "New Light" who promoted the spiritual revivals but he was also completely faithful to his Calvinistic heritage that always rooted Christian experience in biblical revelation.
The book is very readable. Marsden tells a good story, but also explains much of Edwards' profound theology along the way. I HIGHLY recommend it.
